Periodontal Maintenance

Following completion of the non-surgical and if necessary, the surgical phase of your periodontal treatment we will customize a periodontal maintenance regiment that is specifically suited for you to preserve the results gained thus far and ensure continued stability of your teeth and gums. We typically recommend a maintenance regiment that has you alternate your visits between us and your general dentist to allow you to benefit from the joint expertise of your dentist who will help ensure that your teeth, fillings, crowns/bridges, and root canal treatments remain intact, and our office which will help ensure that your gums and bone which serve as the foundation for your teeth remains healthy and stable.

Periodontal maintenance appointments generally include a periodontal examination (intended to evaluate for continued stability of your gums and also to detect any deterioration as early as possible), some scaling and root planing, re-enforcement of oral hygiene measures, and periodic x-rays as required (intended to evaluate for continued stability of your bone levels).

Many patients do not recognize the value of periodontal maintenance following surgery. This is unfortunate as any provided surgery is bound to fail without a continued commitment to the prescribed maintenance regiment. Indeed numerous studies re-enforce this notion and as a consequence we strive to ensure that all our patients will follow through with a periodontal maintenance regiment to ensure long standing stability of their treatment results.
